1st Day of Kindergarten

Today was Lucy's first day of school. She has been really excited to start kindergarten and she did great!  We washed her hair with her new big girl shampoo, pulled her bangs back into a braid and she picked out her outfit. Danny made her favorite banana pancakes and a smoothie for breakfast so she was ready for the day. Her crowning glory is her new Merida backpack from Grandma Karen.

She graciously let me take TONS of pictures of her.

We walked up the block to school ( which is AWESOME!) and dropped her off all together.  She got to play on the playground for a minute beforehand and that is when I lost it.  I remembered my own first day of kindergarten. I was a very shy five year old (and six year old, and seven year old...) and I remember thinking that everyone seemed nice, but they would never want to be friends with me. Worse, instead of just being cool with that and going off to play I was humiliated and ashamed by it.   I stood there watching Lucy play with all these other little girls around and thought, "What if kids are mean to her? What if she feels unwanted or left out? What if she feels uncool?".  On the way home Danny kindly reminded me that Lucy is NOT me. She is outgoing, social, and self-confident.  She has many friends and feels comfortable with herself.  I am so glad she is such an easy-going, confident kid. I would not wish my school years on her and fortunately I don't think she'll have a similar experience.  Fortunately I was able to pull myself together and have a fun Costco outing with Danny and the babies.

I picked her up and she kindly told me all about her first day. I know all the rules of the playground/her classroom, where the bathroom is and that it has an automatic flush.   She can't wait to go back tomorrow:)

Anderson Reunion

This year we had our annual Anderson Reunion in Park City, UT. We stayed in a beautiful home in the Canyons resort.  It was three stories so there was plenty of space for us to spread out, which meant you didn't have to hear screaming babies if you didn't want to. It also meant that we had to be extra careful about all the stairs, but fortunately we didn't have any falls.

Within five minutes of arrival this is where you found Grandma, Bec and Katy. This puzzle table was always occupied by someone (not me...).
Our reunion was Avenger themed. I made a bunch of cute masks that we occasionally wore throughout the week. During an especially exciting game of squeak I donned Hulk mask because I was filled with rage. It didn't improve my next game but somehow made me feel better.
One of our favorite activities was our nerf war. My dad is ruthless- but very worried about eye protection.

The family picture was very difficult to capture this year.  I forgot my tripod and remote so after a lot of maneuvering we managed to get the camera high enough, but then we couldn't figure out how to put it on a timer! I swear I've done it before but it the end we only managed a 2 second timer. Danny pushed the button and ran. You see how well that worked...

In the end Grandma took a pic of the Greg Anderson clan. We're wearing the awesome Avengers shirts Katy made for us (and I drew out:).
After all this hassle the kids were NOT feeling it. We thought we could try to get just a couple with grandma...nope.
Lucy, however, was kind and willing to take a picture for us.

The only family shot we got that was at all decent.
The picture that made the whole event worth it. I LOVE Lucy's face playing with grandpa.
Most of the time we played with babies, went on walks, ate yummy food and enjoyed naptimes in the giant theater room watching each individual avenger movie.  On Friday Mom, Katy and I went into Salt Lake to the Conference Center for president Monson's birthday party.

Now for the story. We dropped off Katy to get our tickets and find out where our designated parking spot was. We were supposed to park about four blocks away from the conference center. Mom and I slugged through traffic while Katy got us ourseats, a little anxious that we wouldn't get there before the "30 min early-and-we -give-your-seat-away" deadline.  Mom and I finally parked and speed walked to the conference center. We arrived dripping sweat with smeared mascara and blisters on our heels. We went through security and the door attendent was handing out plastic bins for personal items. Forgetting this wasn't an airport and Mom's bag would only be glanced through, not put through an x ray machine, I threw her keys into the bin and went through security. Unfortunately, I beeped going through the machine and was directed into the room where I was worried some poor old missionary would have to frisk me. Fortunately I didn't beep going through the second metal detector, Mom grabbed her bag and we raced to our seats right ahead of the stand-by line. Here we are super excited for the event...

After a very nice musical program we waited outside to chat with Grandma Kay, Grandpa Dee and Nancy. We chatted for quite awhile, helped Grandma to the car and finally, at about 10:30 PM, headed to our own car.  We made the long trek and I whined about my bleeding heel the whole way. We were pooped and ready to go home...but where were the keys? After a furious search we realized they were definitely not there and then realized where we had left them.  I switched shoes with Katy and ran ahead trying to make it to the conference center before it was completely closed down. While Ir an I dialed every phone number for the Center/church security I could trying to get a hold of a real person. After finally getting on the line and being on hold for five minutes, the security guy hung up on me. I got back to the center and started banging on the doors. I would occasionally see a janitor but they either ignored me or had their music up really high. I banged and ran around the center to different door for probably ten minutes before I saw a security-like person. I thought he would walk right by me but after some very vigorous pounding (yeah my hands were seriously sore) I got his attention. Five minutes later Mom and Katy had arrived and the keys were in hand! I blessed that man and his posterity I was so happy. Here we are freakishly tired and relieved, and slightly hysterical.

Saturday was my 29th birthday. Man just writing that out makes me feel old. I always thought people who had hissy fits about turning 30 were silly. Thirty is still very young! Well, now that my twenties are quickly coming to an end I'm getting a bit upset about it! That said I had a wonderful birthday. That morning my mom made me Sally Lund bread, which is more like breakfast cake, and I loved it. I put the babies to bed and Becca, Dad, Danny, Lucy and I headed up the mountain to go zip lining.

On her first gondola ride. She LOVED it.
I like a mild thrill but Becca and Danny are way braver than me. They chose to do the more adventurous of the two ziplines, so we did a trainer rope, the red pine zip line and then the serious zip line. I'm really glad we did-it was so much fun. Becca and I rode side by side and screamed the whole way. It was awesome.
Lucy videoed and took pictures of our first two ziplines. Here is her self portrait.

On the way back down the gondola. What a perfect little tourist.

It was such a great day. I like having a birthday over a family reunion, I was completely spoiled all day!

California!

On the last day of July Danny's semester ended and we drove to California for a two week break.  Despite having my parents here at the end of June and my Mom here only the week before we were still really excited:) We drove in and found...

Luke and Emily were moving that very evening so we were lucky enough to get to play with Grandma, Camille and Elizabeth that very afternoon. Our timing was fortuitous because Danny was also there to help out with the move. With my parents away at girls camp for most of the first week we were able to hang out at the Leininger's a lot and visit with the whole family.

That week the girls and their cousins played dress-up, read stories, did art projects with Grandma, played in the sprinklers and ate lots of peaches and popsicles.

Julie and family arrived the day after we did to stay for good! We are so excited that they have moved to California. We celebrated by going to the beach one morning.  It was the babies' first trip to the beach. They were tolerant of the water but loved playing in the sand.

During most of our downtime we played at the Anderson's with Katy and watched countless hours of the Olympics. I am kind of an Olympics fanatic so through the miracle of DVR we watched A LOT of coverage. I still experienced anxiety that we weren't watching everything, but with five NBC affiliates it just wasn't possible.  We did managed to watch all of our favorite events and then some. I loved seeing the English scenery. I thought London did a great job.

During our stay Danny and I got to go on one awesome date.  We had a fun dinner at Va de Vi, a tapas place in Walnut Creek Danny loves that we can only afford if we eat very little:) We also saw the Bourne movie and got some Naia.  We were seriously disappointed in the former and loved the latter.
After a relaxing and fun vacation we headed home for only a couple days before our Anderson Reunion in Park City. While my parents' car zoomed by we did the drive with our full backseat of kiddos. The babies' weren't quite as easy on the drive home so we resorted to this...
it DID NOT WORK! Dramamine only perks my kids up apparently. They were okay they just didn't sleep the whole time. When we got them out at the end of our drive they each had about six binkies in their seats. You can tell binkies are my go-to soother.
